Do not pile cargo higher than the seatbacks to reduce the risk of injury in a collision or sudden stop. Adjusting the front manual seat (if equipped) Never adjust the driver’s seat or seatback when the vehicle is moving. Always drive and ride with your seatback upright and the lap belt snug and low across the hips. For less lumbar support, turn the lumbar support control toward the rear of vehicle. Adjusting the front power seat (if equipped) Never adjust the driver’s seat or seatback when the vehicle is moving. Using the power lumbar support (if equipped) The power lumbar control is located on the outboard side of the seat. Press one side of the control to adjust firmness. Before returning the seatback to its original position, make sure that cargo or any objects are not trapped behind the seatback. After returning the seatback to its original position, pull on the seatback to ensure that it has fully latched. The Personal Safety System can adapt the deployment strategy of your vehicle’s safety devices according to crash severity and occupant conditions. A collection of crash and occupant sensors provides information to the Restraints Control Module (RCM). For other occupants, this occurs when the occupant is not properly restrained by safety belts or child safety seats and they move forward during pre-crash braking. The most effective way to reduce the risk of unnecessary injuries is to make sure all occupants are properly restrained. This helps reduce the risk of force-related injuries to the occupant’s chest by limiting the load on the occupant. The passenger cannot protect the child from injury in a collision.

All occupants of the vehicle, including the driver, should always properly wear their safety belts, even when an airbag supplemental restraint system (SRS) is provided. This helps reduce the belt force acting on the user’s chest. BELT AND RETRACTOR ASSEMBLY MUST BE REPLACED if the safety belt assembly automatic locking retractor feature or any other safety belt function is not operating properly when checked by an authorized dealer. All of the passenger combination lap and shoulder belts have two types of locking modes described below: Vehicle sensitive mode This is the normal retractor mode, which allows free shoulder belt length adjustment to your movements and locking in response to vehicle movement. As the belt retracts, you will hear a clicking sound. This indicates the safety belt is now in the automatic locking mode. The driver and front passenger safety belt system (including retractors, buckles and height adjusters) must be replaced if the vehicle is involved in a collision that results in deployment of front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags and Safety Canopy. This guide is attached to the quarter trim panel and is used to adjust the comfort of the shoulder belt for smaller occupants in the outboard second row seats. Safety belt warning light and indicator chime The safety belt warning light illuminates in the instrument cluster and a chime sounds to remind the occupants to fasten their safety belts. Conditions of operation If. The warnings are the same for the driver and the front passenger. If the BeltMinder warnings have expired (warnings for approximately 5 minutes) for one occupant (driver or front passenger), the other occupant can still activate the BeltMinder feature. Sitting on the safety belt will increase the risk of injury in an accident. To disable (one-time) or deactivate the BeltMinder feature please follow the directions stated below.

Ford Motor Company recommends that all safety belt assemblies in use in vehicles involved in a collision be replaced. Airbags DO NOT inflate slowly; there is a risk of injury from a deploying airbag. Do not modify the front end of the vehicle with anything other than authorized Ford accessories for your vehicle. The airbag SRS is designed to activate when the vehicle sustains longitudinal deceleration sufficient to cause the sensors to close an electrical circuit that initiates airbag inflation. The fact that the airbags did not inflate in a collision does not mean that something is wrong with the system. Do not touch them after inflation. If the air bag has deployed, the air bag will not function again and must be replaced immediately. If the air bag is not replaced, the unrepaired area will increase the risk of injury in a collision. If a person of adult size is sitting in the front passenger’s seat, but the passenger airbag off or pass airbag off indicator lamp is lit, it is possible that the person isn’t sitting properly in the seat. For most objects that are in the front passenger seat, the passenger airbag will be disabled. Even though the passenger airbag is disabled, the pass airbag off lamp may or may not be illuminated according to the table below. Determining if the system is operational The SRS uses a readiness light in the instrument cluster or a tone to indicate the condition of the system. See your authorized dealer. All occupants of the vehicle should always wear their safety belts even when an airbag SRS is provided. The fact that the airbags did not inflate in a collision does not mean that something is wrong with the system. The Safety Canopy injure you as it deploys from the headliner. Do not attempt to service, repair, or modify the Safety Canopy system, its fuses, the A, B, or C pillar trim, or the headliner on a vehicle containing a Safety Canopy.

The Safety Canopy system (including the A, B and C pillar trim) must be inspected and serviced by an authorized dealer. If the Safety Canopy is not replaced, the unrepaired area will increase the. Booster seats position a child so that safety belts fit better. They lift the child up so that the lap belt rests low across the hips and the knees bend comfortably. If a seating position has a low seat back and no head restraint, a backless booster seat may place your child’s head (top. Choose a booster that keeps the lap belt low and snug across the hips, never up across the stomach, and lets you adjust the shoulder belt to cross the chest and rest snugly near the center of the shoulder. They can slide around and increase the likelihood of injury or death in a collision. SAFETY SEATS FOR CHILDREN Child and infant or child safety seats Use a safety seat that is recommended for the size and weight of the child. Install the child safety seat in a seating position with LATCH and tether anchors. For more information on top tether straps and anchors, refer to Attaching safety seats with tether straps in this chapter. The belt will click as it retracts to indicate it is in the automatic locking mode. Tether straps are available as an accessory for many older safety seats. Contact the manufacturer of your child seat for information about ordering a tether strap. For Adrenalin vehicles fixed left rear seat, clip the tether hook onto the anchor bar with the hook toward the rear of the vehicle. In a crash, one anchor may not be strong enough to hold two child safety seat attachments and may break, causing serious injury or death. Follow the child seat manufacturer’s instructions to properly install a child seat with LATCH attachments. The plastic LATCH guides can be obtained from an authorized dealer. Utility vehicles and trucks are not designed for cornering at speeds as high as passenger cars any more than low-slung sports cars are designed to perform satisfactorily under.

Information on transfer case operation and shifting procedures can be found in the Driving chapter. The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use, however, and may depart significantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, service practices, and differences in road characteristics and climate. You are strongly urged to buy a reliable tire pressure gauge, as automatic service station gauges may be inaccurate. Ford recommends the use of a digital or dial type tire pressure gauge rather than a stick type tire pressure gauge. The tires are hot from driving and it is normal for pressures to increase above recommended cold pressures. Also inspect the tire sidewalls for cracking, cuts, bruises and other signs of damage or excessive wear. If internal damage to the tire is suspected, have the tire demounted and inspected in case it needs to be repaired or replaced. Use of any tire or wheel not recommended by Ford can affect the safety and performance of your vehicle, which could result in an increased risk of loss of vehicle control, vehicle rollover, personal injury and death. Unless otherwise specified, rotate the tires approximately every 5,000 miles (8,000 km). This information identifies and describes the fundamental characteristics of the tire and also provides a U.S. DOT Tire Identification Number for safety standard certification and in case of a recall. The speed rating denotes the speed at which a tire is designed to be driven for extended periods of time under a standard condition of load and inflation pressure. The tires on your vehicle may operate at different conditions for load and inflation pressure. Tire Ply Composition and Material Used: Indicates the number of plies or the number of layers of rubber-coated fabric in the tire tread and sidewall. Tire manufacturers also must indicate the ply materials in the tire and the sidewall, which include steel, nylon, polyester, and others.

You may be an excellent driver, but if you are in an accident — even one that is not your fault — you and your passengers can be hurt. Being a good driver does not protect you from things beyond your control, such as bad drivers. Here is how to wear it properly. 1. Close and lock the door. 2. Adjust the seat so you can sit up straight. To see how, see “Seats” in the Index. 3. It may be necessary to pull stitching on the safety belt through the latch plate to fully tighten the lap belt on smaller occupants. The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. The shoulder belt is too loose. It will not give nearly as much protection this way. CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash, you would move forward too much, which could increase injury. In a crash, you could slide under the lap belt and apply force at your abdomen. This could cause serious or even fatal injuries. The lap belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. The belt is buckled in the wrong place. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if your belt is buckled in the wrong place like this. In a crash, the belt would go up over your abdomen. The shoulder belt is worn under the arm. It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury. The belt is twisted across the body. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. In a crash, you would not have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle. Like all occupants, they are more likely to be seriously injured if they do not wear safety belts.

GENERAL MOTORS and GM are registered trademarks of General Motors Corporation. This manual includes the latest information at the time it was printed. We reserve the right to make changes after that time without further notice. Pictures and words work together to explain things. Index A good place to quickly locate information about the vehicle is the Index in the back of the manual. Notice: These mean there is something that could damage your vehicle. A notice tells about something that can damage the vehicle. Many times, this damage would not be covered by your vehicle’s warranty, and it could be costly. The sudden movement could startle and confuse you, or make you push a pedal when you do not want to. The buttons are located on the outboard side of the driver’s and front passenger’s seats. Press the top of the switch to turn the feature on. The seat will heat to the high setting. The sudden movement could startle and confuse you, or make you push a pedal when you do not want to. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts cannot do their job when you are reclined like this. The shoulder belt cannot do its job. In a crash, you could go into it, receiving neck or other injuries. This position reduces the chance of a neck injury in a crash. Pull the restraint up to raise it. This allows you direct access to the trunk. To raise the rear seatback, follow these steps: 1. It also tells you some things you should not do with safety belts. CAUTION: Do not let anyone ride where he or she cannot wear a safety belt properly. Here is why: They work. You never know if you will be in a crash. If you do have a crash, you do not know if it will be a bad one. The rider does not stop. With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does. You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That is why safety belts make such good sense. Questions and Answers About Safety Belts Will I be trapped in the vehicle after an.

This includes infants and all other children. Neither the distance traveled nor the age and size of the traveler changes the need, for everyone, to use safety restraints. In fact, the law in every state in the United States and in every Canadian province says children up to some age must be restrained while in a vehicle. A baby does not weigh much — until a crash. During a crash a baby will become so heavy it is not possible to hold it.Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offer protection for adults and older children, but not for young children and infants. Neither the vehicle’s safety belt system nor its airbag system is designed for them. Add-on child restraints, which are purchased by the vehicle’s owner, are available in four basic types. Selection of a particular restraint should take into consideration not only the child’s weight, height, and age but also whether or not the restraint will be compatible with the motor vehicle in which it will be used. A young child’s hip bones are still so small that the vehicle’s regular safety belt may not remain low on the hip bones, as it should. The harness system holds the infant in place and, in a crash, acts to keep the infant positioned in the restraint. A forward-facing child seat (C-E) provides restraint for the child’s body with the harness and also sometimes with surfaces such as T-shaped or shelf-like shields. A booster seat can also help a child to see out the window. Make sure the child restraint is properly installed in the vehicle using the vehicle’s safety belt or LATCH system, following the instructions that came with that restraint,. One system, the three-point harness, has straps that come down over each of the infant’s shoulders and buckle together at the crotch. We recommend that children be secured in a rear seat, including: an infant or a child riding in a rear-facing child restraint;. We recommend that rear-facing child restraints be secured in a rear seat, even if the airbag(s) are off.

A pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and the lap portion should be worn as low as possible, below the rounding, throughout the pregnancy. Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are wearing safety belts. Rear passengers who are not safety belted can be thrown out of the vehicle in a crash. If it does, let it go back all the way and start again. If the belt is not long enough, see Safety Belt Extender on page 39. Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to. These parts of the body are best able to take belt restraining forces. The safety belt locks if there is a sudden stop or a crash. CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. When installed on a shoulder belt, the comfort guide positions the belt away from the neck and head. The elastic cord must be under the belt. The person wearing the belt could be seriously injured. The shoulder belt should go over the shoulder and across the chest. These parts of the body are best able to take belt restraining forces. Although you cannot see them, they are part of the safety belt assembly. They help tighten the safety belts during the early stages of a moderate to severe frontal and near frontal crash if the threshold conditions for pretensioner activation are met. What is the proper way to wear safety belts. An older child should wear a lap-shoulder belt and get the additional restraint a shoulder belt can provide. Here two children are wearing the same belt. The belt cannot properly spread the impact forces. In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured. A belt must be used by only one person at a time. Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child. If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt.

And, for some unrestrained occupants, frontal airbags may provide less protection in frontal crashes than more forceful airbags have provided in. Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offer the best protection for adults, but not for young children and infants. Neither the vehicle’s safety belt system nor its airbag system is designed for them. The driver’s frontal airbag is in the middle of the steering wheel. The right front passenger’s frontal airbag is in the instrument panel on the passenger’s side. The seat-mounted side impact airbag for the right front passenger is in the side of the passenger’s seatback closest to the door. The roof-mounted side impact airbag for the right front passenger and the person seated directly behind that passenger is in the ceiling above the side windows. Do not put anything between an occupant and an airbag, and do not attach or put anything on the steering wheel hub or on or near any. Your vehicle has electronic frontal sensors, which help the sensing system distinguish between a moderate frontal impact and a more severe frontal impact. In moderate to severe frontal or near frontal collisions, even belted occupants can contact the steering wheel or the instrument panel. In moderate to severe side collisions, even belted occupants can contact the inside of the vehicle. Airbags supplement the protection provided by safety belts. This dust could cause breathing problems for people with a history of asthma or other breathing trouble. To avoid this, everyone in the vehicle should get out as soon as it is safe to do so. The passenger airbag status indicator will be visible when you start your vehicle in the instrument panel. United States The words ON and OFF, or the symbol for on and off, will be visible during the system check. Also make sure the child restraint is not trapped under the vehicle head restraint. If this happens, adjust the head restraint. See Head Restraints on page 15.

If you need to secure a forward-facing child restraint in the right front seat, always move the front passenger seat as far back as it will go. Keep in mind that an unsecured child restraint can move around in a collision or sudden stop and injure people in the vehicle. Not all vehicle seating positions or child restraints have lower anchors and attachments or top tether anchors and attachments. Lower Anchors Lower anchors (A) are metal bars built into the vehicle. Others require the top tether always to be attached. In Canada, the law requires that forward-facing child restraints have a top tether, and that the tether be attached. In the United States, some child restraints also have a top tether. In a crash, the child could be seriously injured or killed. Secure any unused safety belts behind the child restraint so children cannot reach them. Pull the shoulder belt all the way out of the retractor to set the lock, if your vehicle has one, after the child restraint has been. If you want to do this, install one LATCH child restraint in the passenger-side position, and install the other one either in the driver-side position or in the center position. Refer to the child restraint instructions and the following steps: 2.1. Find the top tether anchor. 2.2. See Head Restraints on page 15. 3. Push and pull the child restraint in different directions to be sure it is secure. The passenger sensing system is designed to turn off the right front passenger’s frontal airbag and seat-mounted side impact airbag when an infant in a rear-facing infant seat or a small child in a forward-facing child restraint or booster seat is detected. Do not secure a child seat in this position if a national or local law requires that the top tether be anchored or if the instructions that come with the child restraint say that the top tether must be anchored.

Replace or recharge the vehicle’s battery before reprogramming. To program the driver’s window, follow these steps: 1. Hold the window switch all the way up to the second position. The window rises for as long as the switch is held. Once the switch is released, the express mode is re-activated. Although your vehicle has a number of theft-deterrent features, we know that nothing we put on it can make it impossible to steal. Content Theft-Deterrent Your vehicle may have a content theft-deterrent alarm system. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1. Turn the ignition off and try again. If the engine still does not start, and the key appears to be not damaged, try another ignition key. Notice: Using a tool to force the key from the ignition switch could cause damage or break the key. Use the correct key and turn the key only with your hand. If you leave the key in the ignition and park your vehicle, a chime sounds, when the driver’s door is opened. Your vehicle has a Computer-Controlled Cranking System. This feature assists in starting the engine and protects components. If the ignition key is turned to the START position, and then released when the engine begins cranking, the engine will continue cranking for a few seconds or. This feature is designed for shorter drivers, since the pedals cannot move farther away from the standard position, but can move rearward for better pedal reach. The engine coolant heater cord is located near the air cleaner box on the passenger side of the engine compartment. See Engine Compartment Overview on page 308 for more information on location. PARK (P): This position locks your front wheels. It is the best position to use when you start your engine because your vehicle cannot move easily. CAUTION: It is dangerous to get out of your vehicle if the shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) Your vehicle has an automatic transaxle shift lock control system. It provides the best fuel economy for your vehicle.

Use DRIVE (D) or INTERMEDIATE (I) as much as possible. If the ignition is on, the brake system warning light will come on. See Brake System Warning Light on page 194. To release the parking brake, hold the regular brake pedal down with your right foot. Your vehicle can roll. If you have left the engine running, the vehicle can move suddenly. It could be difficult to pull the shift lever out of PARK (P). Do not park over papers, leaves, dry grass, or other things that can burn. Engine Exhaust CAUTION: Engine exhaust can kill. It contains the gas carbon monoxide (CO), which you cannot see or smell. But if you ever have to, here are some things to know. CAUTION: Idling the engine with the climate control system off could allow dangerous exhaust into your vehicle. Hold the mirror in the center to move it up or down and side to side.If the mirror is not adjusted for compass variance, the compass could give false readings. The mirror is set in zone eight upon leaving the factory. It will be necessary to adjust the compass to compensate for compass variance if the vehicle is driven outside zone eight. Use the selector switch located above the four-way control panel to choose either the left or right outside mirror. If there is one triangular Light Emitting Diode (LED) indicator light above the Universal Home Remote buttons, follow the instructions under Universal Home Remote System Operation. This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Because of the steps involved, it may be helpful to have another person available to assist you in the programming steps. Keep the original hand-held transmitter for use in other vehicles as well as for future Universal Home Remote programming. Do not release the buttons until Step 4 has been completed. Some entry gates and garage door openers may require you to substitute Step 3 with the procedure noted in “Gate Operator and Canadian Programming”. The name and color of the button may vary by manufacturer.

Remove any additional material from the seat cushion before reinstalling or securing the child restraint. If this happens, turn the vehicle off and ask the person to place the seatback in the fully upright position, then sit upright in the seat, centered on the seat cushion, with the person’s legs comfortably extended. If this ever happens, have the vehicle serviced promptly, because an adult-size person sitting in the right front passenger’s seat may not have the protection of the airbag(s). There are parts of the airbag system in several places around your vehicle. Your retailer and the service manual have information about servicing your vehicle and the airbag system. Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. If you see anything that might keep a safety belt system from doing its job, have it repaired. A damaged restraint system may not properly protect the person using it, resulting in serious injury or even death in a crash. To help make sure your restraint systems are working properly after a crash, have them inspected and any necessary replacements made as. They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. The windows will function with the keys in the ignition and they could be seriously injured or killed if caught in the path of a closing. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1. This device may not cause interference. 2. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation of the device. If your vehicle has the remote vehicle start feature, you can also start the vehicle’s engine with the RKE transmitter. The interior lamps turn on and stay on for 20 seconds or until the ignition is turned on.The battery is weak if the transmitter will not work at the normal range in any location. If you have to get close to your vehicle before the transmitter works, it is probably time to change the battery.

Make sure the cover is on tight, so water does not get inside the transmitter. 4. Test the operation of the transmitter with the vehicle. Remote Vehicle Start Your vehicle may have a remote starting feature that allows you to start the engine from outside the vehicle. To start the vehicle using the remote start feature, do the following: 1. Aim the transmitter at the vehicle. 2. When a door is locked, the handle will not open it. You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors are not locked. Press the top of the switch to unlock all doors. Press the bottom of the switch to lock all doors. The rear doors do not have power door lock switches. If the power door lock switch or the transmitter lock button is pressed twice when leaving the vehicle, the doors lock immediately. These prevent passengers from opening the rear doors from the inside. The rear door security locks are located on the inside edge of each rear door. Security Lock Label shown The rear doors must be open to access them. Press the power door lock switch to lock all the doors and then unlock the driver’s door. Press and hold the power door lock switch for more than three seconds to override this feature. The trunk can only be opened while the vehicle is in PARK (P). Emergency Trunk Release Handle Notice: Do not use the emergency trunk release handle as a tie-down or anchor point when securing items in the trunk as it could damage the handle. They can be overcome by the extreme heat and suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Never leave a child, a helpless adult, or a pet alone in a vehicle, especially with the windows closed in warm or hot weather. In addition, each passenger door has a switch for its own window. Express-Down Window The driver’s window has an express-down feature. This switch is labeled AUTO. Press the front of the switch part way, and the driver’s window opens a small amount.

You will have 30 seconds to start Step 8. 8. Return to the vehicle. Firmly press and hold the programmed Universal Home Remote button for two seconds, then release it. The indicator light will come on while the signal is being transmitted. Erasing Universal Home Remote Buttons To erase programming from the three Universal Home Remote buttons: 1. If there are three round Light Emitting Diode (LED) indicator lights above the Universal Home Remote buttons, follow the instructions below. This system provides a way to replace up to three remote control transmitters used to activate devices such as garage door openers, security systems, and home automation devices. Programming a garage door opener involves time-sensitive actions, so read the entire procedure before you begin. If you do not follow these actions, the device will time out and you will have to repeat the procedure. Locate the “Learn” or “Smart” button. It can usually be found where the hanging antenna wire is attached to the motor-head unit and may be a colored button. Press this button. After you press this button, you will have 30 seconds to complete the following steps. Programming a garage door opener involves time-sensitive actions, so read the entire procedure before you begin. If you do not follow these actions, the device will time out and you will have to repeat the procedure. To erase either Rolling Code or Fixed Code on the Universal Home Remote device: 1. Press and hold the two outside buttons at the same time for approximately 20 seconds, until the indicator lights, located directly above the buttons, begin to blink rapidly. Center Console Storage Area Your vehicle has a center console with two storage areas. To access the upper tray storage, lift the passenger side lever. To access the lower storage area, lift the driver side lever. The sunroof will only operate while the ignition is in ON or in ACC, or if Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is active. See Retained Accessory Power (RAP) on page 118.

There is a separate control for the automatic sunshade. The second glass panel will retract and the fourth glass panel will stack above the roof. The sunshade will automatically retract to this position. See Instrument Panel Cluster on page 188. D. Then move the steering wheel up or down or backward or forward into a comfortable position. Pull the lever up to lock the steering wheel in place. Do not adjust the tilt and telescope lever while driving. These positions let you signal a turn or a lane change. To signal a turn, move the lever all the way up or down. Clear ice and snow from the wiper blades before using them to prevent damage. If the wiper blades are frozen to the windshield, carefully loosen or thaw them. If your blades do become damaged, get new blades. This can really help on long trips. CAUTION: Cruise control can be dangerous where you cannot drive safely at a steady speed. CANCEL: Press to cancel cruise control. To set a speed do the following: 1. The exterior lamp control has the following four positions: (Headlamps): Turn the band to this position to turn on the headlamps, parking lamps, and taillamps. To turn the headlamps off when it is dark outside but keep other exterior lights on, turn the exterior lamp control to the parking lamp position. As with any vehicle, you should turn on the regular headlamp system when they are needed. The ignition must be on for the fog lamps to work. Push the button to turn the fog lamps on. An indicator light in the button will glow when the fog lamps are on. If the dome lamp has a switch, the following are the settings. (Off): Move the lever to this position to turn the lamp off, even when a door is open. (Door): Move the lever to this position so that the lamp comes on when a door is opened. It prevents the display lights and indicator lights from being dim, while the parking lamps are used during the day. Overhead Console Reading Lamps The vehicle may have reading lamps on the overhead console.

There are two accessory power outlets. One accessory power outlet is inside the center storage console and the other is located on the center storage console below the climate controls. If your vehicle has the remote start feature, the climate control system functions as part of the remote start feature. See Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Operation on page 96. The air inside the vehicle will be recirculated through the climate control system and the vehicle, not from outside your vehicle. This mode is helpful when trying to limit odors from entering the vehicle and for maximum air conditioning performance in hot weather. This helps reduce the time it takes for the vehicle to cool down. It also helps the air conditioning system operate more efficiently. For quick cool down on hot days, do the following: 1. In this mode, the system automatically forces outside air into the vehicle. The air-conditioning compressor does not run unless the outside temperature is at or below freezing. The air-conditioning compressor operates although the indicator light is not on. When the vehicle transitions out of the remote start mode, the rear defogger turns off. See Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Operation on page 96. The current set temperature displays. When AUTO is selected, the air conditioning operation and air inlet is automatically controlled. A light above the button comes on while the air conditioning is on. The system automatically controls the fan speed if defrost is selected from the AUTO mode. The climate control knobs will remain active during a remote start. The pictures help to locate them. Warning lights and gages can signal that something is wrong before it becomes serious enough to cause an expensive repair or replacement. Paying attention to the warning lights and gages could also save you or others from injury. You will know how fast you are going, how much fuel you are using, and many other things you will need to drive safely and economically.

See DIC Vehicle Personalization on page 211 for more information. Your odometer shows how far your vehicle has been driven, in either miles (used in the United States) or kilometers (used in Canada). This would only occur if the passenger airbag is enabled. CAUTION: If the on indicator comes on when you have a rear-facing child restraint installed in the right front passenger’s seat, it means that the passenger sensing system has not. See Passenger Sensing System on page 80 for more on this, including important safety information. If one part is not working, the other part can still work and stop you. For good braking, though, you need both parts working well. If the warning light comes on, there is a brake problem. Driving with the brake system warning light on can lead to an accident. If the light is still on after you have pulled off the road and stopped carefully, have the vehicle towed for service. A CHECK TIRE PRESS DIC message will accompany the light, see DIC Warnings and Messages on page 206 for more information. If the light comes on and the vehicle has been operating under normal driving conditions, pull off the road, stop the vehicle, and turn off the. Diagnosis and service may be required. If so, your electrical system may be wet. The condition will usually be corrected when the electrical system dries out. A few driving trips should turn the light off. Have you recently changed brands of fuel. If so, be sure to fuel your vehicle with quality fuel. This indicates that your engine is not receiving enough oil. The light goes out when the cruise control is turned off. See Cruise Control on page 167 for more information. Highbeam On Light This light comes on when the high-beam headlamps are in use. The DIC has different modes which can be accessed by pressing the DIC buttons. The button functions are detailed in the following.

Information Modes (Information): Press this button to scroll through the following vehicle information modes: Outside Air Temperature and Odometer Press the information button until the outside. The rider does not stop. With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does. You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That is why safety belts make such good sense. Questions and Answers About Safety Belts Will I be trapped in the vehicle after an. The lap belt is too loose. CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your lap belt is too loose. In a crash, you could slide under the lap belt and apply force at your abdomen. The belt is buckled in the wrong place. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if your belt is buckled in the wrong place like this. In a crash, the belt would go up over your abdomen. The belt is over an armrest. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if your belt goes over an armrest like this. The belt would be much too high. In a crash, you can slide under the belt. The belt force would then be applied at the abdomen, not at the pelvic bones, and that could cause serious or fatal injuries. The shoulder belt is worn under the arm. It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm.

GENERAL MOTORS and GM are registered trademarks and the name OUTLOOK is a trademark of General Motors Corporation. This manual includes the latest information at the time it was printed. We reserve the right to make changes after that time without further notice. A box with the word CAUTION is used to tell about things that could hurt you or others if you were to ignore the warning. CAUTION: These mean there is something that could hurt you or other people. Notice: These mean there is something that could damage your vehicle. A notice tells about something that can damage the vehicle. Many times, this damage would not be covered by your vehicle’s warranty, and it could be costly. The sudden movement could startle and confuse you, or make you push a pedal when you do not want to. See Manual Seats on page 9 for more information. To raise the seat, move the lever upward repeatedly until the seat is at the desired height. Press and release either button 1 or button 2 corresponding to the desired driving position. The sudden movement could startle and confuse you, or make you push a pedal when you do not want to. Head Restraints Adjust the head restraint so that the top of the restraint is at the same height as the top of the occupant’s head. This position reduces the chance of a neck injury in a crash. Be sure to return the seat to the passenger seating position. To return the seatback to the seating position: 1. Raise the seatback into place by using the pullstrap from the rear of the vehicle, or by pushing it into place from inside the vehicle. 2. Removing the Third Row Seats 1. Remove the cargo management system, if it is in the vehicle. It also tells you some things you should not do with safety belts. CAUTION: Do not let anyone ride where he or she cannot wear a safety belt properly. If you do have a crash, you do not know if it will be a bad one. A few crashes are mild, and some crashes can be so serious that even buckled up, a person would not survive.

Although you cannot see them, they are part of the safety belt assembly. They help tighten the safety belts during the early stages of a moderate to severe frontal, near frontal or side crash or a rollover if the threshold conditions for pretensioner activation are met.

In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury. The belt is twisted across the body. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. In a crash, you would not have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. The belt should go back out of the way. When the safety belt is not in use, slide the latch plate up the safety belt webbing. The latch plate should rest on the stitching on the safety belt, near the guide loop on the side wall. Like all occupants, they are more likely to be seriously injured if they do not wear safety belts. Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is secure. When the shoulder belt is pulled out all the way, it will lock. If it does, let it go back all the way and start again. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you would be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen. For outboard seating positions, when the safety belt is not in use, slide the latch plate up the safety belt webbing. The latch plate should rest on the stitching on the safety belt, near the guide loop on the side wall. Here is how to install a comfort guide to the safety belt: Outboard Positions 1. For the outboard positions, remove the guide from its storage clip on the interior body. The elastic cord must be under the belt. The person wearing the belt could be seriously injured. The shoulder belt should go over the shoulder and across the chest. These parts of the body are best able to take belt restraining forces.

It is better to secure the child restraint in a rear seat. If your child restraint has the LATCH system, see Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) on page 61. Wearing your safety belt during a crash helps reduce your chance of hitting things inside the vehicle or being ejected from it. Do not sit unnecessarily close to the airbag, as you would be if you were sitting on the edge of your seat or leaning forward. The system checks the airbag electrical system for malfunctions. The light tells you if there is an electrical problem. See Airbag Readiness Light on page 212 for more information. Driver Side shown, Passenger Side similar The seat-mounted side impact airbags for the driver and right front passenger are in the side of the seatbacks closest to the door. The passenger airbag status indicator will be visible on the instrument panel when you start your vehicle. United States The words ON and OFF, or the symbol for on and off, will be visible during the system check. Even though the passenger sensing system is designed to turn off the right front passenger’s frontal and seat-mounted side impact airbag if the system detects a. When the passenger sensing system has turned off the right front passenger’s frontal airbag and seat-mounted side impact airbag, the off indicator will light and stay lit to remind you that. When the passenger sensing system has allowed the airbags to be enabled, the on indicator will light and stay lit to remind you that the airbags are active.

This system is designed to make installation of a child restraint easier. The LATCH system uses anchors in the vehicle and attachments on the child restraint that are made for use with the LATCH system. A top tether anchor is built into the vehicle. The top tether attachment (B) on the child restraint connects to the top tether anchor in the vehicle in order to reduce the forward movement and rotation of the child restraint during driving or in a crash. To assist you in locating the top tether anchors, the top tether anchor symbol is located on the trim cover or near the anchor. This anchor should be used for the center seating position only. Never install two top tethers using the same top tether anchor. Do not secure a child restraint in the right front passenger position or the third row outboard seating positions, if a national or local law requires. In a crash, the child could be seriously injured or killed. Secure any unused safety belts behind the child restraint so children cannot reach them. Pull the shoulder belt all the way out of the retractor to set the lock, if your vehicle has one, after the child restraint has been. A rear seat is a safer place to secure a forward-facing child restraint. See Where to Put the Restraint on page 59. In addition, your vehicle has a passenger sensing system.

If an object is in the way of the window as it is express-closing, or in certain weather conditions like severe icing, the window will stop and open to a factory preset position. The window functions normally once the obstruction is removed. Although your vehicle has a number of theft-deterrent features, we know that nothing we put on it can make it impossible to steal. Content Theft-Deterrent Your vehicle may have a content theft-deterrent alarm system. It activates only if you use the power door lock switch with the door open or the RKE transmitter. You should also remember that you can start your vehicle with the correct ignition key if the alarm has been set off. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1. At this time, you may also want to check the fuse, see Fuses and Circuit Breakers on page 476. If the engine still does not start with the other key, your vehicle needs service. The SERVICE THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM message displays on the Driver Information Center (DIC) when there is a problem with the theft-deterrent system. A (OFF): This is the only position in which you can remove the key. This position locks the ignition and transmission. Notice: Using a tool to force the key from the ignition switch could cause damage or break the key. If you leave the key in the ignition and park your vehicle, a chime will sound when you open the driver’s door. Move your shift lever to PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N). To restart when you are already moving, use NEUTRAL (N) only. When using the Electronic Range Select Mode a number will display next to the L, indicating the current gear that has been selected. See Electronic Range Select mode in this section for more information. If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shift lever, then push the shift lever all the way into PARK (P) as you maintain brake application. It provides the best fuel economy for your vehicle. This means that all gears below that number are available.

For example, when FOURTH (4) is shown next to the L, FIRST (1) through FOURTH (4) gears are automatically shifted by the vehicle. It maintains the vehicle’s speed by automatically implementing a shift schedule that uses the engine and the transmission to slow the vehicle. This reduces wear on the brakes system and increases control of the vehicle. Push down momentarily on the parking brake pedal with your left foot until you feel the pedal release, then slowly pull your foot up off the park brake pedal. See Automatic Transmission Operation on page 129. It contains the gas carbon monoxide (CO), which you cannot see or smell. It can cause unconsciousness and death. But if you ever have to, here are some things to know. CAUTION: Idling the engine with the climate control system off could allow dangerous exhaust into your vehicle. Hold the mirror in the center to move it up or down and side to side. There is a compass display in the window in the upper right corner of the mirror face. The number shown is the current zone number. 3. Press (A) to select the driver’s side mirror or (B) to select the passenger’s side mirror. Press either (A) or (B) again to deselect the mirror. To adjust each mirror, press one of the four arrows located on the control pad to move the mirror in the direction you want it to go. Then press the arrows located on the four-way control pad to adjust the mirror. See Automatic Dimming Rearview Mirror with OnStar Compass on page 139. Curb View Assist If your vehicle has the memory package, the outside mirrors are able to perform the curb view assist mirror function. The mirrors will heat to help clear fog or frost from the surface of the mirror. If there is one triangular Light Emitting Diode (LED) indicator light above the Universal Home Remote buttons, follow the instructions under Universal Home Remote System Operation. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1. This device may not cause harmful interference. 2.

See “Safety Belts” and “Child Restraints” in the Index for additional information about the importance of proper restraint use. CAUTION: Stowing of articles under the passenger’s seat or between the passenger’s seat cushion and seatback may interfere with the proper operation of the passenger sensing system. See Safety Belt Reminder Light on page 211 for more information. A damaged restraint system may not properly protect the person using it, resulting in serious injury or even death in a crash. To help make sure your restraint systems are working properly after a crash, have them inspected and any necessary replacements made as. They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. The windows will function with the keys in the ignition and they could be seriously injured or killed if caught in the path of a. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: 1. This device may not cause interference. 2. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation of the device. However, the operating range may be less while the vehicle is running. There are other conditions which can affect the performance of the transmitter. Pressing the unlock button on the RKE transmitter will disarm the content theft-deterrent system. The battery is weak if the transmitter will not work at the normal range in any location. If you have to get close to your vehicle before the transmitter works, it is probably time to change the battery. Remote Vehicle Start Your vehicle may have a remote starting feature. This feature allows you to start the engine from outside of the vehicle. After the key is removed from the ignition, the vehicle can be remote started again. The vehicle cannot be remote started if the key is in the ignition, the hood is not closed, or if there is an emission control system malfunction. When a door is locked, the handle will not open it.

You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors are not locked. These prevent passengers from opening the rear doors from the inside. The rear door security locks are located on the inside edge of each rear door. You must open the rear doors to access them. If the driver’s side power door lock switch is pressed when the driver’s door is open and the key is in the ignition, all of the doors will lock and then the driver’s door will unlock. See Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Operation on page 100. To open the liftgate, press the touchpad on the underside of the liftgate handle. See Power Liftgate on page 110. Your vehicle may have a power liftgate. The vehicle must be in PARK (P) to use the power feature. Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Operation on page 100 for more information. If you shift the transmission out of PARK (P) and accelerate before the power liftgate latches closed, the liftgate may reverse to the open position. With the power liftgate disabled and all of the doors unlocked, the liftgate can be manually opened and closed. To open the liftgate, press the touchpad on the handle on the outside of the liftgate, and lift the gate open. They can be overcome by the extreme heat and suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Never leave a child, a helpless adult, or a pet alone in a vehicle, especially with the windows closed in warm or hot weather. They can be overcome from extreme heat in warm or hot weather and suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons, children or others could be badly. The power windows work when the ignition has been turned to ACCESSORY or ON or when Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is active. See Retained Accessory Power (RAP) on page 125. Press the switch to lower the window.

This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. This device complies with RSS-210 of Industry Canada. Because of the steps involved, it may be helpful to have another person available to assist you in the programming steps Keep the original hand-held transmitter for use in other vehicles as well as for future Universal Home Remote programming. Release both buttons. 5. Press and hold the newly-trained Universal Home Remote button and observe the indicator light. This may not be long enough for Universal Home Remote to pick up the signal during programming. Similarly, some U.S. gate operators are manufactured to time out in the same manner. Because of the steps involved, it may be helpful to have another person available to assist you in programming the transmitter. Be sure to keep the original remote control transmitter for use in other vehicles, as well as, for future programming. The indicator lights will turn on. 6. Press and hold the button you would like to use to control the garage door until the garage door moves. Use the key to lock and unlock. Cupholder(s) There are two cupholders, with removable liners, located in front of the center console. There are cupholders located in the second row seat armrest. This allows the mat to remain in position under your feet and out of reach of the accelerator and brake pedal.

Load cargo so that it rests as far forward as possible and against the side rails, making sure to fasten it securely. To open, pull the handle toward the rear of the vehicle and lift the cover up. There is an additional storage compartment on each side of the system. The rear sunroof does not open. The switches to operate the front sunroof and rear sunshade are located on the headliner above the rearview mirror. See Instrument Panel Cluster on page 210. See Heated Seats on page 12. S. Dual Automatic Climate Controls. See Dual Automatic Climate Control System on page 198. T. Passenger Air Bag Status Indicator. See Passenger Sensing System on page 86. U. Glove Box. See Glove Box on page 161.To tilt and telescope the steering wheel, pull down the lever. Then move the steering wheel up or down or backward or forward into a comfortable position. The lever will return by itself when you release it.If the headlamps are on, they will return to low-beam when the lever is released. This feature operates even when the headlamps are off. The wipers clear the windshield and either stop or return to the preset speed. The ignition key must be in ACCESSORY or ON for this to work. This can really help on long trips. When you apply your brakes, cruise control is turned off. The cruise control light on the instrument panel cluster comes on after the cruise control has been set to the desired speed. See Fog Lamps on page 184. Delayed Headlamps The delayed headlamps feature provides a period of exterior lighting as you leave the area around your vehicle. The other lamps that come on with the headlamps will also come on. When it is bright enough outside, the headlamps will go off and the DRL will come on. The lamps can also be turned on by turning the instrument panel brightness control clockwise to the farthest position. In this position, the dome lamps will remain on until they are turned off. The ignition must be off for delayed entry lighting to work.

Press the button to turn them on and off. Electric Power Management The vehicle has Electric Power Management (EPM) that estimates the battery’s temperature and state of charge. It then adjusts the voltage for best performance and extended life of the battery. If any of these lamps are left on, they will automatically turn off after 10 minutes, if the ignition is off. This distance may be less during warmer or humid weather. URPA comes on automatically when the shift lever is moved into REVERSE (R).Your vehicle may have four accessory power outlets. They are located on the instrument panel below the climate controls, inside the front center console storage bin, at the rear of the center console, and in the rear cargo area. If you try to use equipment that requires more than the limit, a protection circuit will cut the power supply. Manual Operation (Fan): Turn the left knob clockwise or counterclockwise to increase or decrease the fan speed. Turn the knob all the way counterclockwise to turn the front system off. In this mode, the system automatically selects outside air. Recirculation cannot be selected when in Floor Mode. The right knob can also be used to select defog or defrost mode. You can select different temperature settings for the driver and all passengers. Display Function Each time the temperature, mode, or fan control buttons are pressed the display shows that. The temperature can be adjusted even if the system is turned off.Use the driver’s or passenger’s temperature buttons to adjust the temperature setting as necessary. Press the up arrow to increase fan speed and the down arrow to decrease fan speed. The air conditioning compressor also comes on when this mode is activated. Do not cover the solar sensor or the system will not work properly. The interior temperature sensor located on the instrument panel to the right of the steering column, measures the temperature of the air inside the vehicle.

The system may also supply cooler air to the side of the vehicle facing the sun. The system can be controlled from the front controls as well as the rear controls. To turn the system on, press the AUX button on the front climate control system, an indicator will be lit. The pictures help to locate them. Warning lights and gages can signal that something is wrong before it becomes serious enough to cause an expensive repair or replacement. Paying attention to the warning lights and gages could also save you or others from injury. You will know how fast you are going, about how much fuel you have used, and many other things you will need to know to drive safely and economically. The odometer shows how far your vehicle has been driven, in either miles or kilometers. Your vehicle has a tamper-resistant odometer. If your vehicle needs a new odometer installed, the new one will be set to the mileage total of the old odometer. This would only occur if the passenger airbag is enabled. Have your vehicle serviced right away. CAUTION: If the airbag readiness light stays on after you start your vehicle, it means the airbag system may not be working properly. Your instrument panel has a passenger airbag status indicator. United States When you start the vehicle, the passenger airbag status indicator will light ON and OFF, or the symbol for on and off, for several seconds as a system check. It should go out once the engine is running. If it stays on, or comes on while you are driving, you may have a problem with the charging system. The light will stay on if your parking brake does not release fully. If it stays on after your parking brake is fully released, it means you have a brake problem. Then start the engine again to reset the system. If the light still stays on, or comes on again while you are driving, your vehicle needs service. If the regular brake system warning light is not on, you still have brakes, but you do not have antilock brakes.

If this happens you should pull over and turn off the engine as soon as possible. See Engine Overheating on page 400 for more information. Notice: Driving with the engine coolant temperature warning light on could cause your vehicle to overheat. A CHECK TIRE PRESSURE Driver Information Center (DIC) message will accompany the light. If the light does not come on, have it repaired. If so, reinstall the fuel cap, making sure to fully install the cap. See Filling the Tank on page 381. The diagnostic system can determine if the fuel cap has been left off or improperly installed. Failure to pass this inspection could prevent you from getting a vehicle registration. Here are some things you need to know to help your vehicle pass an inspection: Your vehicle will not pass this inspection if the check engine light is on or not working properly. It goes off once you start your engine. That is a check to be sure the light works. The DIC has different displays which can be accessed by pressing the DIC buttons located on the instrument panel. See Instrument Panel Overview on page 170 for more information. This display allows the system to be turned on or off.To re-learn the tire positions, see Tire Pressure Monitor System on page 433. See Tire Inspection and Rotation on page 438 and DIC Warnings and Messages on page 239 for more information. This display shows the current distance traveled in either miles (mi) or kilometers (km) since the last reset for each trip odometer. Both trip odometers can be used at the same time. Pressing the trip odometer reset stem will also display the trip odometers. This is because different driving conditions produce different fuel economies. This average is calculated based on the various vehicle speeds recorded since the last reset of this value. This display shows the current distance traveled in either miles (mi) or kilometers (km) since the last reset for each trip odometer. Both trip odometers can be used at the same time.

Whether you're a professional or a do-it-yourself Volkswagen owner, this manual will help you understand, care for and repair your vehicle. Though the do-it-yourself Volkswagen owner will find this manual indispensable as a source of the same detailed maintenance and repair information available at an authorized Volkswagen dealer, the Volkswagen owner who has no intention of working on his or her car will find that reading and owning this manual will make it possible to discuss repairs more intelligently with a professional technician. Overall, it's a crucial tool in servicing the covered models but I find that internet searches are required to clarify points on each job I've done. Some pictures are zoom out from low resolution, so lines are not straight. All electrical drawings are very small, you need magnifying glass to see it. As times are changing there is less info to the publisher from the car manufacturers. I am doing restoration and conversion to electric so I found this manual very useful.Repair information is very limited. I am very upset with this purchase, because everything in this book, I can find online with a couple minutes search on google. My Haynes manual is more useful. Do not purchase.Better just using YouTube and google to fix your car but I have used both just to make sure on torque specs are right and parts.I've owned Haynes books before, but this one just blows the Haynes one out of the water in terms of content. A must have for people wanting to work on their own cars. The only bad thing wasnt regarding the product, but the shipping. There was no option to choose another courier, and we all pretty much knows UPS isnt the most user friendly. They only deliver during working hours, their warehouse is super far, and they even left the wrong InfoNotice. Bad callComplete electrical schematics, nice basic mechanical drawings. Gives you basic parts removal, no advance info for rebuilds. All values to reinstall, including torque values are there. No in debt debug, but does have a list of DTC codes in SAE and VAG. Useful if you have the basic OBD handheld. In conclusion, its a must for basic repairs that you can do with common tools in a everyday garage. In order to navigate out of this carousel please use your heading shortcut key to navigate to the next or previous heading. Even if the work is beyond your capabilities, it helps you diagnose problems and informs you of what needs to be done. Bentley manuals are a worthwhile investment. I bought this book because I buy one for all my VWs and it was highly discounted on Amazon. These manuals were critical before the Internet. Now you can go to vwvortex, and after much searching, find information similar to this manual (sometimes with lots of good photos). I generally check both. Even though my car is relatively new (6 years old), there have been two instances where I needed this manual and was happy I had it on hand. This manual is nicer than previous Bentleys. It uses high quality paper, better printing, and even includes beautiful color diagrams (the Jetta Sportwagen manual is hardcover). This increased complexity has reduced the utility of the Bentley manual even though it is better than Bentleys for earlier VW models. But it definitely still worth buying.I'm a DIYer with a 2008 rabbit, and this manual definitely provides more than I need to keep my car maintained and perform minor fixes. Frankly, I had been reading stuff off forums on the internet, and there is so much inaccurate crap there that sounds right. Just keep in mind that if you don't want to do much of the work yourself, this book is probably a little too much for your needs. I do find it good, however, for determining what tasks I can do myself, and what tasks I should get a pro to do. As well, if I do need a pro to do something, I will know exactly how to talk to them about the fix and hopefully not get screwed. Plus, its just cool to sit and read random sections and learn about how the thing works. Many times, this method proved time consuming and confusing. The time and frustration saved by having an accurate, easy to read and understand reference made for money well-spent. If you plan on doing ANY maintenance, I highly recommend you have this manual at your side.Best reference work working on GTI.

The steering suffers from a small amount of on center numbness, but otherwise is weighted well and offers good feedback to the driver. Braking is sufficient, though the pedal feel isn't linear and feels soft. Most of these weaknesses only show up while approaching the car's limits. In normal driving the chassis remains very well balanced and pleasant to drive. In other words, it's a typical Golf. You may be able to find more information about this and similar content at piano.io. You may order presentation ready copies to distribute to your colleagues, customers, or clients, by visiting The 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit is an all-new car that replaces the Golf. The Rabbit comes with the intention of providing a German designed, German engineered and German built alternative to the Asian-nameplate vehicles that dominate the entry level of the American automotive marketplace, namely the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, and Hyundai Elantra. Unlike many of its competitors, whether Asian or domestic, the Rabbit is a hatchback and therefore offers the advantage of cargo-carrying utility not provided by the typical two- or four-door sedan design. Hatchbacks are becoming popular again. Dodge, for example, has abandoned its traditional Neon sedan in favor of a new entry-level five-door hatchback called the Caliber. The Rabbit offers only one engine, but it has been tuned for American-style driving. Volkswagen's 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder offers the sort of torque that Americans want for off-the-line acceleration and for merging into freeway traffic. Though no rocket, we found the Rabbit to be quick, responsive and fun to drive. Its four-wheel independent suspension and relatively long wheelbase give it a nice ride along with good stability and handling. This responsive engine is available with a six-speed automatic transmission that only adds to its flexibility and responsiveness, making the Rabbit a good choice for commuting in heavy traffic.

We may earn money from the links on this page. But public perception of the Rabbit soon deteriorated due to its headache inducing unreliability. Over time, the Golf grew in size and price, and lost its image as hip, basic transportation in the process. Now for 2007, Volkswagen is bringing back the Rabbit, hoping it embodies the spirit of the original—but not the poor quality record. Its platform also underpins the GTI and Jetta, as well as Audi's A3 and upcoming 2008 TT. Motivation comes from a 2.5-liter, inline-five that produces 150 horsepower—a 30 percent bump in power over the outgoing 115-hp 2.0-liter—and a stout 170 pound-feet of torque.Redline is a sad 5500 rpm, 1000 revs less than the inline-five found in the Chevrolet Colorado pickup. Just when the Rabbit's lump starts to sing, you have to shift. That said, there's plenty of torque available to lug in higher gears all day long; during our test drive we skated through Philadelphia traffic with ease and effortlessly merged onto the interstate. But it wasn't any fun.The Rabbit absorbs jounces and potholes with ease, yet still manages undulations and switchbacks with a level keel.
